Lee Sang-Hoon

Abstract
This study was to find out the similarities and differences of empty chair technique between psychodrama and gestalt therapy broadly loved as a group therapy that have so many similarities in the use of techniques. This empty-chair technique in the two approaches is similar that clients or group participants can see client take the counterpart of the problem in the field of here and now, and he can do experiment about the problem with the imaginary counterpart which can help them to understand and empathize with him. And another similarity is that the two approaches use the empty-chair technique as to get some effect of resolution and catharsis, and further more connected to insights through direct dialogue with counterpart or using some material like paper-bat to bit him in the situation of imaginary presence of him. In the other hand, as a difference in the process of using the empty-chair technique, gestalt therapy is tend to emphasize "I-Thou relationship" through the dialogue relationship, but psychodrama hold on to the point of view, "director and protagonist". And another difference is that psychodrama has more interested in the emotional catharsis and insights, and gestalt therapy more in the integration of the splitted self by two part.
